The famous John Ramsay was Master Whisky Maker at The Glenrothes from 1991 until his retirement in 2009, when he passed the mantle on to his apprentice Gordon Motion. Gordon had worked as John’s assistant for over 10 years and completed a two-and-a-half year handover.
John started in the whisky industry in 1966 and enjoyed an illustrious career as one of the most respected Master Whisky Makers in the world. He was inducted into the Icons of Whisky Hall of Fame in 2008.
The Vintage 2004 started as John Ramsay’s vision to create a new Glenrothes Vintage in 100% first fill sherry seasoned, American Oak casks that best enhanced The Glenrothes fruity new make spirit with coconut and vanilla notes.
Gordon Motion inherited the stock, alongside John’s legacy, and decided to bring his own contemporary vision to the whisky making tradition of his predecessor. Gordon Motion created a small batch ‘distillery exclusive’ edition of Vintage 2004 at the higher strength of 48.8% as his ideal ‘sweet spot’ for a comfortable strength, whilst still maintaining as much of the original spirit’s character.
Gordon Motion’s homage to his own whisky father figure, John Ramsay.
An exceptional bottle that represents a collaboration between two generations of Master Whisky makers. That’s why you’ll find both their names on the label.Discover More Our News »
